Transheldrake
Survey Systems

· Surveys

Transheldrake staff has undertaken the design and execution of surveys for all transportation modes, and conducted them under different environments and weather. The survey locations cover all possible sites and various data collection methodology has been used. Each survey is tailored to the available statistics and control totals achievable, in addition to the correct socioeconomic’s of the region. The zoning system used in the survey is designed in conjunction with the studies zone system. The survey sample system is important and in the case of quota sampling the necessary quotas need to be selected and achieved.

Industrial surveys are achieved by extensive use of Government ISC data. Profiles of freight traffic generated by a particular region can be appraised. This is particularly useful for rail freight terminals, ports, or airports in assessing their potential demand. Survey work undertaken has encompassed the following elements

· Modes surveyed: rail, bus, air, auto, truck, and ferry
· Surveys type include: passenger attitudinal research, stated preference, revealed preference, origin and destination, customer service expectations and industrial surveys.
· Survey locations include: on board, stations, terminal lounge, roadside, household, rest stop and licence plate surveys
· The survey methods used include: self filled in questionnaires, full interview, mail-in surveys and cordon counts.

The following surveys were designed and undertaken by Transheldrake staff . The study titles and the modes involved include:
· Boston-Portland Rail Service Restoration Study, bus, auto and air
· Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec Incremental Improvement Analysis Study, rail, bus, auto and air
· Bristol Rail Study, rail, bus, auto, and air
· Midwest Regional Rail Study, rail, bus, auto and air

Logan International Airport: Logan 2000 Study

In this study Transheldrake staff were responsible for the development and execution of the survey. The survey collected value of time and ease of access data for patrons of the airport. Of particular interest was the airports access features and the type of travellers response to these facilities.

MTO: Survey Methodology for Intercity Trucking Activity

In this study the methodology of the MTO goods traffic survey was analysed. A sampling frame and methodology were established, and a method of expansion to provincial levels. Additional data sources were identified and integrated in the survey process. Transheldrake staff were responsible for the preparation of this report.

Survey Operations outside North America

Isle of Wight County Council: Secured Services Surveys

Transheldrake staff pioneered the development of survey software QSurvey, using light pen and barcode data capture. This system utilized psion organisers hand held computers. Using light pens a bar coded survey system was developed, thus data entry stage is eliminated, and analysis following a menu driven set format could be undertaken directly after downloading the data to a PC. The overall annual budget for these secured services was £0.45m.

Isle of Wight County Council: Concessionary Fare Surveys

Transheldrake staff using the Qsurvey system set up and organised the regular monitoring and survey sample frame that was used to apportion the Concessionary fares budget to the various Island bus and train operators. The annual budget was £0.6m.

Sealink Transmark: Freight Carriers Survey

Transheldrake staff were involved with this international freight carriers survey undertaken on three of Sealink’s Irish sea routes

Coras Iompair Eireann: Road Passenger Planning Group Surveys

The Road Passenger Planning Group coordinated all planning and service levels for the provincial bus service in Ireland. Transheldrake staff were responsible for most of the surveys and survey design used. These surveys included household surveys, onboard surveys and cordon count surveys. Individual surveys designed and organised by Transheldrake staff were

· Waterford City Services
· Cork Provincial services
· Limerick City Services
· Limerick Provincial Service
· Dublin Area Kildare Services
· Interlink Expressway Services
· Cross border and Cross Channel Expressway Services
