Greyhound Canada Transportation Corp: Toronto Airport Downtown Express Bus Service Proposal Bid

Transheldrake with the Greyhound management group put together the Toronto Airport Downtown Express Bus Service Proposal Bid. This proposal to the GTAA involved Transheldrake providing input on:

· The proposed schedule and style of service
· Creation of an operating plan, and vehicle requirements
· Creation of marketing plan
· Adaption of Customer Service plan
· Review of the Emergency Response Plan


Transheldrake staff has worked with several bus operator’s as part of other transportation studies. This has involved conducting survey work on various bus routes. Where the study required bus transit involvement the necessary scheduling and costing has been assessed. North American studies Undertaken by Transheldrake staff that have had a bus involvement are

Coras Iompair Eireann: Interlink Expressway Bus Network

Transheldrake staff wrote Road Passenger Planning Group working papers 20-22 which proposed and expanded the Expressway route network in the late 1970's. This was a fundamental change of approach resulting in a spinal system connecting most centers in Ireland between once and twice a day. The network was introduced by 1980,Transheldrake staff were responsible for
· Original conception and idea
· All schedule and timetable planning
· Initial approach to Trade unions for acceptance trials
· Development and introduction of ticketing system and fare tables
· The brand name Interlink and original media advertizing

Coras Iompair Eireann: Limerick Provincial Bus Services

Transheldrake staff were responsible for this study that reappraised the entire operation of the Limerick region of CIE. Thirty two routes were proposed for alteration varying from withdrawal to retiming, the work involved
· Surveying existing operations
· Analysis of bus utilization and crewing schedules
· Analysis of passenger preferences and patterns of travel
· Negotiation of realistic time lines between management and unions
· Financial costings of proposed changes were prepared
· Overall savings on the annual budget achieved were IR£1.8m

Transheldrake staff were responsible for this study that reappraised the entire operation of the Cork region of CIE. Forty five routes were proposed for alteration varying from withdrawal to retiming, the work involved

Transheldrake staff were responsible for this study that reappraised the entire operation of the Sligo District of CIE. Ten routes were appraised and alterations proposed, the work involved

· The use of a flat fare system was first proposed and introduced in Ireland in Waterford

Coras Iompair Eireann: Post Bus and Community Bus Services

Transheldrake staff wrote Road Passenger Planning Group working papers RB1 and RB2 which examined the role of Post Buses in the UK and the growth of Community bus services . The papers analysed the potential for introduction into the Republic of Ireland. The conclusion was that they were not suitable. A limited rural minibus service was introduced in Birr combining a school bus route and a regular stage route.

Isle of Wight County Council: Cowes Sailbus

This transit concept was developed by Transheldrake staff into a service carrying 2,500 passengers for the week from a base of 600. The service was based on a skibus system serving the town of Cowes during the sailing regatta Cowes Week. In addition to the expansion of service and passengers, the Sailbus was sponsored by advertizing revenue covering its operational costs.

Isle of Wight County Council: Arreton Valley Bus

This minibus service, serving outlying areas of Sandown and Shanklin, was planned and developed by Transheldrake staff with grant aid from the Rural Development Commission

Isle of Wight County Council: Red Squirrel Bus Service

Transheldrake staff instigated the first Post bus replacement service in the UK, with the Red Squirrel service. The service serving the West Wight area of the Island was a joint PSV and community bus service. Funding was obtained from the Rural Development Commission. The marketing image of the Red Squirrel after the woods it operated through was Transheldrake staff ’s concept.

Isle of Wight County Council: Community Transport Initiatives

Transheldrake staff introduced several community transport based networks serving areas that could not support full bus services. These were

Community Transport officer to coordinate and expand these initiatives

Coras Iompair Eireann: Bus Utilization Study

In this study Transheldrake staff developed a graphic timetable depicting the utilization of all of CIE’s provincial bus and coach fleet. This was displayed graphically showing the duties and locations for all 2,500 vehicles.

Coras Iompair Eireann: Grant Support Study

In this study Transheldrake staff analysed the fare levels and grant support levels of several British National Bus Company operations and compared them to CIE. In addition to the provincial and long distance routes several city operations were analysed.


Coras Iompair Eireann: Bus mileage Reporting Study

In this study Transheldrake staff examined the recording and usage of bus mileage statistics in both engineering and traffic functions of CIE. A proposed computerized system was developed and instigated suitable for all end users
