The first serious sailors and drinkers association was named by the late Benny Reeves in the Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club after a December frostbite race, when we were looking for a name for an umbrella association to run fun regattas under, ie trips to Dalkey Island. By affiliating to the IYA the organisation would be able to conduct races and events under the auspices of the IYRU, therefore be legal!
So the Dun Laoghaire Serious Sailors and Drinkers Association was formed in 1980 adopting the motive of the outline of the East pier on the cross of St Patrick. Many people thought it was a type 22 Frigate as the Falklands war was in vogue at the time. The Christmas cards were produced under the banner of the SSADA productions using the @ symbol for trademark (This was way before email.)

In 1986 the flag moved from Dublin to Cowes, Isle of Wight and the Cowes and Solent association was formed. The St Georges cross was adopted superimposed by Souters crane that dominates the River Medina in Cowes.

The in 1992 the flag moved to Hamilton in Ontario, Canada and the Hamilton Harbour association was formed. The three bridges of Hamilton were selected as the motive the St Georges cross was retained.

Then in 2001 the flag moves south of the border to Annapolis MD. This created the Annapolis and Chesapeake association, the motif was the 5 mile long bay bridges (there are two alongside) again on the St Georges cross.

In 2008 the flag moved back to Europe but not to fixed destination, so the No Fixed Abode has been created the NFASSADA. The flag has retained the St Georges cross, but as in the Royal St George it is reversed,(having sailed 72,000 miles under this burgee, we are somewhat attached to it). The sails and one wave from the Sheldrake logo were used. This logo (Sheldrake’s) is stolen from Network Southeast (BR) who devised it for the Solent Link back in 1988. It was too good to lose in Networks Southeast’s demise. So I changed the tack the sails were on (to starboard) and added a wave. Historical note the sails were supposed to represent Bembridge Redwings, the only boat I have sailed with red sails is Flowerpot the Mirror.

2009 the flag has been established in Palma de Mallorca PSSADA on the island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean. The flag follows the NFSSADA design with the reversed cross and the Sheldrake wave, and three windmills, these represent the five windmills that along with the La Seo (Cathedral) dominate the harbour (along with apartments and hotels).

Access to Blogs and Scribblings, Reports, Photographs etc

The public conduit for writings associated with Sheldrake, Transheldrake and the SSADA is Pintal. Under the nombre de plume Pintal, various articles have been written over the years since 1980, some published in magazines, newspapers etc and some not. The purpose of this NFASSADA section is to publish on the web articles that are more personal in nature and not really suitable for open web access. All the photographs are down loadable unlike the right click denied on the main website. Both a User name and password are required for access. If you feel that you should have access, please use the contact page to contact us.
